Saturday 29 May 2021:

Alice Springs Graded Road Race 1.
A beautiful sunny, but cool day greeted the small number of riders from the club to tackle Larapinta Drive and the wind gusts which seem to be part of the road…

A grade: Only Mikey and Clive were there to slog out the 80kms, and with the pair managing a cracking pace completing the first 40km in a 1 hour and 3 minutes it would turn into a war of attrition. Mikey showing signs of the firm pace at the 55km mark, dropping the wheel and Clive slowly moved away to finish the 80km. Mikey ended up 6 minutes down with Clive finishing in a time of 2 hours and 15 minutes averaging 36.5 kph. Hardest race of 2021 so far!

B grade: Rolling out 2 minutes behind A grade the small bunch of riders worked well as they faced 60 kms of the Larapinta drive 10.2km out and back circuit. The bunch was tight over the first lap, but slowly but surely cracks started to appear as riders faced their limits. Leaving a three-way sprint to the line with Nicola, Max, and Laurie to fight it out… The head wind at the finish was a daunting thought but it was Laurie who was able to kick and just keep clear of the powerful Max as he stormed home to the line, with Nicola in the slip stream to finish third… great job team!

C grade: I was told there was three Clydesdales in the race today to gallop the 40 km event… once again in small numbers on the Larapinta Drive circuit would see the group split. Teddy being the strongest on the day to gallop clear of the trotting Stew and then Bob.

Thanks for all the Members popping out for the blasts of energy…. Extra thanks to Russell for keeping the team safe at the turn around. Great job by Andrea running the race and me, for setting up. Three tribes up next…. keep your eyes peeled for details!

Three Tribes

Riders, Runners and Riders
The Alice Springs Cycling Club, Alice Springs Running Club and Central Australian Rough Riders came together for a great social event to mix our athletes up in teams or individuals, to compete in a road leg and then run or MTB leg. A great afternoon was achieved with a promise for the event to reoccur next year with vigor.
