Stuart's Well Gran Fondo Results

7 May 2019

Last Saturday saw the first of three Gran Fondos for the season with the 90km ride south to Stuart’s Well. A relatively small but committed group of 11 riders set off from town and pit stopped near the prison to shed some clothing that had been required for the cool start to the morning. After filling water bottles, toilet breaks and snacks, the ride really started with several groups forming quickly. Bohdan, Laurie, Clive and Max bolted like they were on a mission, Andrea and newcomer Glen Turvey (up from Melbourne for a few months) teamed up and the rest rode as a pack for much of the way. New mum Emily Procopis had arranged to share the ride with fellow mum Claire Treilibs, Emily riding the first 45km or so and then Claire taking over. Michael Lentas decided the distance was not sufficient challenge so made it harder by riding a mountain bike. And not just any MTB. One with 33 inch wheels ( or more - it looked BIG). Unfortunately, Michael had constant chain problems yet luckily still managed to complete the distance - well done Michael! Meanwhile up front...the breakaway group of four became three when Clive had to turn around to go home for a planned activity.

The remaining three sped along taking regular turns on the front until it got a bit interesting with a few kms to go. Laurie was the first to try to get away, but the other two were not having a handle bar of it. Max tried valiantly to shake the other two off, and while Laurie had done his dash, Bohdan stuck like glue. A few more attempts had the same result until the home straight when his younger legs and speed propelled him clear of Max to take line honours in a time of 2.23.17. Max came in three seconds later then Laurie a further six seconds back. All three averaged 43km/hr for the 65km stretch from the prison, helped by a largely tailwind.
Andrea and Glen had a good battle in the home straight until Andrea’s strong legs let her pull away in the mini battle, to be the first woman home - great job Andrea!

All riders enjoyed the favourable conditions and the splendid bbq lunch at Stuart’s Well, courtesy of riders supplying their own salads and deserts, but mainly the cooking by director Helen Buckley and hubby Clarky. A fantastically well organised event that was enjoyed by smaller numbers than usual. Thanks to Russell for driving the bus and Clarky for towing the bike trailer.
